Examine the work of a playwright
Examine the work of a playwright
This standard asks you to examine and write about a playwright's work in depth. You'll explore what ideas and concerns matter to the playwright, how those ideas show up in their plays, and the wider context (like history, social issues, or theatre style) that shaped their work. You must use examples from at least two different plays to back up what you say.
You examine a playwright's work by identifying their concerns and finding examples in the texts that show where and how those concerns appear.
You examine the work with informed understanding by giving detailed explanations with clear examples from the texts, and exploring how the playwright's social or historical context connects to their ideas.
You examine the work with perceptive understanding by making insightful connections between the plays, the playwright's wider world, and broader themes or ideas beyond the texts themselves.
