Reading Māori speech · AS 91663
Te tātari i te reo kōrero
This standard asks you to analyse and explain how different features of Māori speech — like context, main ideas, language techniques (sayings, metaphors, etc.), and body language — work together to create meaning and affect how listeners understand the message. You need to identify these features and explain why the speaker chose them and how they help get the message across.
- ·Identify the context (situation, audience, purpose) of the kōrero (speech or text)
- ·Pick out the main ideas and explain what the speaker is trying to communicate
- ·Spot language techniques (like kīwaha/idioms, whakataukī/proverbs, whakatangata/personification, kupu honohono/conjunctions) and explain what they do
- ·Analyse how body language and tone (facial expressions, hand gestures, voice pitch, emotional weight) support the message
- ·Show how all these elements work together to influence the audience
You identify the main language features and body language in the kōrero and explain what they mean.
You explain how the language techniques and body language affect the meaning and show the speaker's choices fit the audience and context.
