Demonstrate understanding of the properties of organic compounds
You need to show you understand how organic compounds work: their structures, how they react, and how their chemical properties connect to what they actually do. This is about linking the shape and arrangement of atoms in organic molecules to their behaviour in reactions and how to identify them.
You identify functional groups, name compounds, draw some correct structural formulae, recognise simple reaction types, and complete some steps of reaction schemes.
You complete most steps of multi-step reactions, explain techniques like distillation and heating under reflux with reference to boiling points, determine structural formulae from molecular formula and observations, and draw accurate structural formulae with correct bonding.
You provide logically sequenced answers that fully address the question intent, complete complex multi-step reaction pathways with clear reagents and products, integrate explanations of structure and reaction conditions to justify outcomes, and justify identification of compounds using multiple pieces of evidence.
