Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended written and/or visual Samoan texts
AS 91566 is a Level 3 (Year 13) Samoan reading standard worth 5 credits. Students read three extended written or visual texts in Samoan and answer questions in English or Samoan that show they understand what the texts mean — not just on the surface, but also the deeper messages, emotions, and cultural ideas behind them. In 2025 the three texts were about social media, a poem about a Samoan mother and son after the son studies overseas, and changes in communication from traditional letter writing to modern online messaging.
You can identify the main ideas in each text and give a basic explanation. Your answers show a general understanding of what the text is about, but they may be brief, partly summarised from the text, or lacking depth and analysis.
You give clearly expressed, well-organised answers with relevant examples from the texts. You show you understand not just what is said but why — for example, explaining a writer's intent or the emotional shift in a poem — though your analysis may not be fully developed throughout.
You show thorough understanding, including subtle or implied meanings that are not directly stated. You use detailed evidence to justify your conclusions, analyse how meaning and emotion are created, and write in a well-organised, insightful way across all parts of the exam.
