What does NZQA Scholarship Spanish actually test?

Scholarship Spanish is a three-hour exam testing all four language skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking. You write responses in Spanish to audio passages (Q1), write a response in English or te reo Māori to Spanish texts (Q2), then go to a separate recording room and speak in Spanish for 3–4 minutes on a question linked to the earlier material (Q3). The big challenge is not just understanding the Spanish stimulus material, but using it as a springboard for your own analysis and original ideas — not just summarising what you heard or read.

In the speaking section, you give a concise, well-organised argument of 3–4 minutes rather than padding to fill the full five minutes, which keeps the examiner engaged and avoids repetition. 6. Your responses are logically structured with an engaging introduction, a well-organised body, and ideas that build on each other rather than circling back to the same point.

What's the difference between Scholarship and Outstanding in Spanish?

Accepted Answer

Scholarship (~3% of candidates): Scholarship-level work shows detailed comprehension of the stimulus, accurate and idiomatic Spanish, mature ideas that are clearly organised, and genuine integration of the texts into your response. Outstanding (~0.3%): Outstanding work goes further by adding consistent independent analysis and insightful personal opinions on top of the text — and doing this fully and concisely across all three questions, including a tightly structured, non-repetitive speaking response.

How do I prepare for NZQA Scholarship Spanish?

1. Practise responding to questions, not summarising texts — after reading or listening to anything in Spanish, force yourself to form and argue your own opinion on it rather than retelling it. 2. Develop a bank of your own examples, comparisons, and ideas on common themes (identity, language preservation, society, etc.) so you can weave original thinking into any question under exam conditions. 3. For the speaking section, practise stopping at 3–4 minutes with a clear conclusion — examiners flagged that candidates who push to five minutes tend to repeat themselves and lose impact, so quality over quantity matters here. 4. Work on fully answering every sub-part of a question: the most common reason candidates miss Scholarship or Outstanding is leaving one aspect of a question underdeveloped, which the examiner notices immediately.
