Scholarship Music tests your ability to perform (or compose, or analyse) at an advanced level, then write a detailed, original critical reflection that proves you understand what you've done and why. You submit a 15-minute portfolio (video performance, composition recordings, or musicology essay) plus a written analysis of up to 3000 words with proper sources and score annotations—all specifically prepared for Scholarship.

What examiners reward in Outstanding work
  • ·Performance video shot with a single fixed camera that clearly shows your technique (especially pedalling, bow movement, finger work), with an audience visibly present
  • ·Critical reflection that deeply analyses the actual performance or finished work itself (not just preparation)—with specific, annotated musical examples and references to a wider body of knowledge
  • ·Composition that demonstrates exceptionally original thematic material, sophisticated structural choices, mature instrumentation decisions, and a distinctive compositional voice
  • ·Writing that is consistently of exceptional quality, using precise musical terminology with well-informed conclusions and original insights that don't echo past exemplars or show signs of AI generation
  • ·A portfolio that is visibly prepared specifically and exclusively for Scholarship—with appropriate stage etiquette, confident introduction, and clear audience acknowledgement
  • ·Critical reflection that authentically traces the whole creative or performance journey and makes convincing, relevant links between your analysis and your actual submitted work

Scholarship requires you to submit a well-prepared, advanced-level portfolio that meets all the technical and format guidelines, with a substantial, original critical reflection that demonstrates strong understanding and makes clear links to your portfolio using properly referenced sources.

OOutstanding (~0.3%)

Outstanding work is rare (~0.3% of candidates) and stands out by showing genuine originality and insight—your critical reflection digs into what actually happened in your performance or composition with specific, annotated musical evidence, you write with a distinctive voice (not templated), and every element of your portfolio feels thoughtfully designed specifically for this award.

How to prep
  1. 1.Record your performance video on a fixed, single camera positioned so examiners can clearly see your technique. Do not edit multiple performances together; it must be one continuous recording at a real performance with a visible audience.
  2. 2.Annotate every musical example in your critical reflection with clefs and time signatures so they mean something to the reader.
  3. 3.Write a reflection that focuses on evaluating your actual performance or finished work, not just your preparation or background story.
  4. 4.Build your critical reflection on a wide range of legitimate sources (score analysis, recordings of other performances, published music literature, musicology texts) and reference them formally and correctly. Avoid relying on or echoing past exemplars.
