What's the difference between Scholarship and Outstanding in History?

Scholarship (~3% of candidates): You demonstrate sound historical knowledge, use sources to support your arguments (not as a crutch), allocate time fairly to all three questions, plan clear writing, and show you understand what each question is asking. Outstanding (~0.3%): You integrate sources and knowledge so seamlessly it reads as one confident voice, you evaluate competing historian views with precision, you identify and fully develop the historical relationships the question demands, and you show sophisticated, informed understanding of New Zealand context that shapes your analysis.

How do I prepare for NZQA Scholarship History?

1. Study competing historian interpretations on your theme (not just one textbook account), and practise critiquing their strengths and limitations. 2. For Question Two especially, identify the exact historical relationships the question is asking for and develop each one in your argument. 3. Plan before you write and practise allocating depth evenly across all three questions. 4. Build and practise your Aotearoa New Zealand context knowledge in depth; Outstanding responses showed sophisticated, informed understanding of NZ-specific issues, not generic knowledge.

NZQA Scholarship History tests your ability to build sophisticated historical arguments using both provided sources and your own knowledge. You answer three extended-response questions: one on competing historical narratives, one on how historical relationships (like cause-and-effect and change-over-time) help historians evaluate the past, and one on New Zealand history from 1870s–1940s. The exam rewards you for synthesising sources with wider context, not just summarising sources or showing isolated knowledge.
