Outstanding (~0.3%): You demonstrate sophistication in French that leaves examiners wanting more, explore complex ideas independently of the stimulus material, use a very wide range of complex structures with minimal errors, and synthesise a fully balanced response that shows genuine critical thinking beyond the source texts.

How do I prepare for NZQA Scholarship French?

1. Move beyond description: practise interweaving your own analysis and opinion with evidence from texts, not listing what they say. The report flags that non-Scholarship candidates write 'descriptive recounts' with no personal development—examiners reward the opposite. 2. Master Level 8 grammar complexity: focus on varied subordinate clauses, conditional structures, and sophisticated verb forms. The report emphasises that 'consistent language level and a very wide range of complex structures' distinguishes Scholarship candidates. 3. Prepare to challenge the material: practise raising critical questions and extending ideas beyond what's stated (e.g. 'This assumes…', 'But what if…'). Outstanding candidates show 'evidence of critical and independent thinking' and explore ideas beyond the stimulus. 4. For the speaking section, always reference the quote or instruction from the card in your response. The report notes that strong candidates 'referred to the stimulus material of each question, including the quote supplied in the speaking section'—some weaker candidates missed this entirely.
