NZQA Scholarship Drama tests your ability to perform three solo pieces (a scripted extract from an established playwright, a self-devised piece based on your own research, and a 2-minute improvised scene) and to articulate your artistic choices through confident, theory-informed analysis on camera. You're marked on both the quality of your performance *and* your ability to explain your thinking—showing that you understand drama as a craft, not just as something you do.

What examiners reward in Outstanding work
  • ·Communicated ideas convincingly with perception and insight in on-camera introductions, showing independent thought and extrapolation from personal experience or contemporary concerns
  • ·Applied performance techniques in sophisticated and imaginative ways, with accomplished and engaging embodiment of roles
  • ·Reflected on impromptu performance by explaining exactly *how* specific drama conventions and techniques created dramatic interest, and identifying what worked and what might change
  • ·Synthesised knowledge of drama theory, role, and situation coherently—showing assured, sophisticated integration of theory into actual performance choices
  • ·Demonstrated an independent and explorative approach to pre-prepared tasks by extrapolating from the brief with authority, rather than playing it safe
  • ·Analysed their own work critically and concisely, going beyond description to explain *why* choices mattered

You demonstrate critical thinking about your own performances, support your introductions with research, match appropriate theory to your genre or style, and reflect thoughtfully on how you used drama conventions under time pressure.

You distil complex theory and practice into convincing, insightful performance and articulate your ideas with authority, independent interpretation, and sophisticated integration—showing an explorative rather than formulaic approach to all three tasks.

How to prep
  1. 1.Don't just describe what you did—explain *why* you chose specific drama techniques and how they actually created dramatic interest. Examiners reward analysis, not narration. Practice reflecting on your impromptu piece in real time by naming the conventions you used and their effect.
  2. 2.Choose your scripted extract and self-devised concept early, and research a drama theorist or practitioner whose methods genuinely influenced your process. Scholarship work shows *synthesis*—you're not bolting theory onto performance; you're showing how research shaped your choices.
  3. 3.In your on-camera introductions, show independent thinking. Don't give a generic textbook answer about your playwright or concept. Draw connections to your own life, contemporary issues, or artistic questions that matter to *you*—examiners specifically reward candidates who extrapolate beyond the brief.
  4. 4.In Part Three, use the 2 minutes to plan something you can actually execute well under pressure. Rehearse creating distinct characters through physicality, space, and voice; don't rely only on dialogue. When reflecting, reference the specific conventions you used (status, contrast, tableau, proximity, etc.) rather than vague phrases like 'good acting'.
